Digital Finance — Quick Answers

What are the UPI transaction limits in India?
Default UPI limit is Rs 1 lakh per day for person-to-person transfers. Higher limits (up to Rs 5 lakh) apply for specific use cases like tax payments, education fees, and hospital bills. UPI Lite (offline low-value) has a Rs 500 per transaction cap. Your bank may set stricter internal limits.
What is the digital rupee (e-Rupee)?
e-Rupee is the RBI's central bank digital currency (CBDC), launched in pilot in 2022. It's a digital form of the physical rupee stored in an RBI-issued wallet (via participating banks). Unlike UPI, it settles instantly at RBI without commercial bank intermediation. Still in pilot phase.
What is ONDC and how does it affect small merchants?
Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC) is a government-backed protocol that decouples buyer and seller apps. A merchant listing once can be discovered across all ONDC-enabled buyer apps. Aims to reduce dependency on aggregators like Zomato/Swiggy while lowering seller fees.
Is UPI safe to use for large transactions?
UPI is secure at the protocol level (encrypted, 2FA via PIN), but user-side risks remain. Never share your UPI PIN with anyone. Beware of 'request money' scams. For very large transactions, use IMPS or NEFT which have similar security but higher explicit friction. Enable transaction alerts always.
