Loan rejected? What your rejection message means
The exact messages lenders and loan apps show when they say no, what each one usually means, and what to do next.
A rejection message means one lender said no, not every lender. Messages like “We couldn't move forward with your loan application” rarely give the reason. It is usually your credit report, your income, or the amount you asked for. Ask the lender for the main reason, check your credit report for mistakes, and apply where your profile fits instead of applying everywhere.

What each message means
“We couldn’t move forward with your loan application at this time”
What it means: The lender’s check said no, and the message doesn’t say why. It is a general decline. The usual reasons are something in your credit report, your income, or the lender’s own rules for your profile.
What to do: Ask the lender for the main reason (a bank must give it in writing). Check your credit report for mistakes. Don’t reapply at once: compare lenders whose criteria fit you.
“Soft eligibility rejected”
What it means: You were turned down at the first screening, before a full application. This check uses the basic details you entered, such as age, income, job type and pincode, and usually a look at your credit record.
What to do: Check that what you entered is right: your name as on PAN, your monthly income, your pincode. A different lender may accept the same details.
“Your monthly income does not meet the eligibility criteria”
What it means: The income you entered is below this lender’s minimum for the loan you chose.
What to do: Minimum income differs from lender to lender. Ask for a smaller amount, or apply where your income qualifies.
“Rejected due to loan parameters not meeting the loan criteria”
What it means: The amount or tenure you asked for is outside what this lender offers someone with your profile. Often the amount is too high for your income.
What to do: Try a smaller amount or a different tenure, or see which lenders offer the amount you need.
“Rejected because of credit policy / Credit assessment rejected”
What it means: The lender’s internal credit rules said no. These rules usually look at your credit report: your score, missed or late payments, how many loans you already pay, recent applications, or too little credit history.
What to do: Get your credit report and check it line by line. Pay down overdue amounts. Lenders’ rules differ, so one “no” is not every lender’s answer.
“Your last loan application was rejected as you did not meet the criteria”
What it means: The app is still applying its earlier decision to you.
What to do: Wait until the app lets you apply again, and use the time to fix the reason. Meanwhile, compare other lenders.
Does the lender have to tell you why?
- Banks: yes, in writing. For any loan or credit card application, whatever the amount, a commercial bank must give you the main reason for the rejection in writing, within the time it publishes for credit decisions.
- Housing finance companies: yes, in writing. So must an NBFC that rejects a credit card application.
- Other NBFCs and loan apps: not required. RBI's rules ask them to acknowledge your application, not to explain a rejection. You can still ask their grievance officer for the reason.
Before you apply again
- Find the reasonAsk the lender for the main reason. A bank must give it to you in writing; with other lenders, ask the grievance officer.
- Check your credit reportLook for loans that aren’t yours, payments marked late that you paid, or wrong personal details. Raise a dispute with the credit bureau if something is wrong.
- Space out applicationsEach application can add an enquiry to your credit report. Many in a short time can count against you.
- Match the lender to your profileMinimum income, amount and credit score rules differ between lenders. Apply where you fit, not everywhere.
