APR (annual percentage rate) is the yearly cost of a loan, including the interest and all other charges. Fees come out of the loan, so you receive less than you borrow but repay EMIs on the full amount. That makes the APR higher than the interest rate. Since 1 October 2024, RBI has required lenders to show it in a Key Facts Statement before you sign. In RBI's own example, a ₹20,000 loan at 15% for 24 months with ₹400 of charges has an APR of 17.07%.

How APR is calculated: RBI's example

RBI computes the APR on the net disbursed amount, using the IRR approach and the reducing balance method. This calculator does the same: it finds the monthly rate at which your EMIs repay the cash you actually received, and multiplies it by 12. On RBI's example it gives 17.07%, the figure RBI prints.

Loan amount₹20,000
Interest rate (fixed, reducing balance)15% a year
Tenure24 monthly EMIs of ₹970
Total interest₹3,274
Fees and charges (₹240 to the lender, ₹160 to third parties)₹400
Net disbursed: the cash you receive₹19,600
APR17.07%

The rate is 15%, but the true yearly cost is 17.07% because ₹400 never reaches you.

Questions about APR

What is APR in a loan?
RBI defines the Annual Percentage Rate (APR) as the annual cost of credit to the borrower, including the interest rate and all other charges associated with the loan. It is the one number that lets you compare loans with different rates and fees.
Why is my APR higher than my interest rate?
Because the fees come out of your loan. You receive less than you borrow, but you repay EMIs on the full amount. In RBI's own example, a ₹20,000 loan at 15% with ₹400 of charges has an APR of 17.07%.
Does APR include GST and insurance?
RBI says the APR includes all charges the lender levies, plus charges it collects for third parties, such as insurance and legal charges. RBI's text doesn't spell out GST. This calculator counts the GST on the fee, because it comes out of your loan too.
Is a flat rate the same as APR?
No. A flat rate charges interest on the full amount for the whole tenure, so it looks lower than it is, and it leaves out fees. Choose "Flat" above to see the APR of a flat-rate quote.
What is a good APR for a personal loan?
There is no single good number. It depends on the amount, the tenure and your profile. Compare the APR of offers for the same amount and tenure, and check the maximum APRs loan apps state on their own listings.
